Wineskin is a tool used to make ports of Windows software to Mac OS X. The ports are in the form of normal Mac application bundle wrappers. It works like a wrapper around the Windows software, and you can share just the wrappers if you choose.
For mac users who have experienced using windows, you will know that in windows, applications and programs are usually saved in the C drive, with a shortcut on the desktop for you to run. In windows, all supporting systems draw your files from the drive and the folder “program files” containing the necessary documents for your game.

For mac, it is a little different. The things that are concealed are preference files, where you alter settings for an application. All the documents required to run the program are in the application file itself.
The basic concept of wineskin is that it emulates a windows system by containing a C drive folder inside the application and also containing several supporting systems in order to run the software. The virtual “PC” created is called a “wrapper”.
There are many different types of windows software installation procedures. The most common involves running a setup executable file which will unpack all the necessary documents into the correct places in your “program files”. The second possibility is that all the necessary program files are in a folder, with a launching executable file together with them.
But nomatter what, your virtual “PC” has to created first. This will be made into a .app document, just like normal Mac applications. Thus, you will able to see it on your dock after you have set it up.
After downloading wineskin, you will see an application called “Wineskin Winery”. Open this application.
If you have just downloaded the application, you will not see any “installed engines”. To add an engine, click on the little “+” sign to the left of “New Engine(s) available!”. Choose the latest engine (at the top) as they usually contain more features.
After doing that, you will be able to see the engines you installed in the starting screen. Choose one of them and click “Create New Blank Wrapper” at the bottom. Name the application.
You will have to wait for the next step. In the meantime, it will request you to download two things, personally I find them unnecessary for most of the applications, so you can just click “cancel”. Anyway, porting windows applications is a matter of trial-and-error, so if it does not work in the end, you try to change some settings.
After you have finished creating the wrapper, it will inform you.
Blank wrapper has been created
Click “View wrapper in Finder”. Now that you have an empty .app file, you just have to put in the files of your windows application into this virtual windows system.
As you can see, I have created a blank wrapper. Launch this.
First launch of a blank wrapper
Right now what you need to do is to go to “Install Software” where you can choose either to use an installation executable file to unpack the application data, or if you already have the application data unpacked, move/copy the folder into the blank wrapper. You can also set Screen Options to play games fullscreen, though in any case you can just hide your dock while playing a windowed game by using keyboard shortcut command-option-D.
However, go to “Advanced”. Here you can add in an icon file to display a nice icon of your application instead of the default wineskin icon. More important, go to the “Tools” tab.

Not all windows applications are that friendly. Unpacked applications such as “Plants vs. Zombies” can work directly without using any advanced settings, but many applications require built-in game engines and software in a windows application. DirectX is the most common thing that is required, especially the several Dlls that are needed to run many games. However, it is possible to use “Winetricks” to install most of these things required into the wrapper itself, enabling the application to run.
Firstly, search to find what files you need for the application to work. For example, touhou 10.5 and 12.3 require d3dx9_33.dll. Thus, upon entering “Winetricks”, go under “dll” and look for d3dx9 wine trick. This will get you all the d3dx9 dll files. However, if you are unsure of which dlls you need, you can simply download the entire DirectX9 as one of the winetricks. This is most important feature and can fix MANY applications that supposedly do not work in wineskin.
Of course there are other settings, and you need to experiment to get your application working. The whole business of using Wineskin is to keep experimenting until it works. That’s about all.
